Art Therapy For Stress & Anxiety Relief

One minute you’re laughing and then at the drop of a hat, your child flips a 180 and is completely upset.

Tears start to form under their sweet little eyes.

Their face tightens and begins to turn red while their fists are clenched.

And next thing you know, feelings have escalated with screaming and slamming doors.

You’ve tried everything in your current toolbox to help your child regulate their emotions and manage these ups and downs, but nothing seems to help.

Maybe you have a child who is difficult to talk to and won’t say anything…

This is why ART THERAPY works incredibly well, breaking the barriers for children to express themselves without a dependency on words in a clinically proven way to effectively help support their emotional and mental health.

It is a beneficial treatment for children struggling with anxiety, depression, behavioral challenges, social skills, ADHD, the loss of a loved one, divorce or separation of parents, and other life transitions.

Creating art is a way to give an image to the feelings allowing one to take a step back and separate themselves from the thoughts and experiences.

As an Art Therapist, I help children use different materials to communicate emotions not easily vocalized and help to create a trusting bond to meet them where they are.

Allowing children to be in control of art supplies while creating something new is a powerful experience so they can express their thoughts and feelings and build their confidence.

Art therapy creates a powerful way for a child to express overwhelm, confusion and undefined feelings, so they can begin to understand how they feel inside and why as they begin to learn effective ways to calm their nervous system.

Children can create their own storyboards, poems, comics, drawings, sculptures or volcanoes to tell their stories from their perspective.

Every child has their own unique way to cope and express thoughts and emotions.

Our job is to figure out how to best support them where they are and give them the tools and strategies to have their needs met in a healthy way.

Some children do not express emotions, some act out or regress in their natural behavior, and others become anxious so the art allows us to go deeper and connect with them through their love of art making.

It is VITAL to allow children to tell their story and also identify their own personal feelings surrounding their experiences.

Some children use art to tell stories and recreate images, while others choose to use art as a cathartic means to release stress and anxiety.

Whichever way a child chooses to use art in their healing process the art inherently allows the individual to become an active participant in their healing process.
